Schladming-Dachstein — Austria

For the 2027 Mazovian winter break we are taking the whole group to the Schladming-Dachstein region in Styria — in both weeks of the break, each in a different hotel. Week 1: Saturday 30 January to Saturday 6 February. The four connected mountains above Schladming offer 123 km of runs: wide, gentle slopes for children and long descents for parents. This week we stay at the family-run Landhotel Häuserl im Wald, which we checked in person — with saunas, its own ice rink and a curling lane, and a Polish tour leader stays with the group throughout.

There in one day — no overnight stop on the way

Italy is about 14 hours’ drive from Warsaw, which leaves just two options: drive straight through and arrive exhausted, or stop overnight and spend two days in the car. Schladming is about 9 hours away — you get there in one day with no overnight stop, and the next morning you are rested and ready to ski.

Our home for the winter break

Landhotel Häuserl im Wald

We checked this hotel in person — we were there in October. It is clean and kept in perfect condition, and it stands at the edge of the forest in Mitterberg, 800 m above sea level, with views of the Grimming and the Dachstein — peace and quiet all around. It is run by the Langanger family, the third generation of hosts. After skiing there is no need to go anywhere: the saunas, the ice rink and the curling lane are right at the hotel, and horse-drawn sleigh rides are available on request.

In the hotel

  • saunas: a Finnish forest sauna, a bio sauna, an infrared cabin with colour therapy and a relaxation room,
  • its own ice rink by the hotel (open until 9 pm) and a curling lane: 2 hours of curling for the whole group free of charge,
  • a 12 km cross-country trail right by the hotel when there is enough snow, and a toboggan run 500 m away, floodlit in the evening — the hotel lends sledges for free,
  • there is no skate rental on site — if you want to skate or go cross-country skiing, you need to bring your own gear,
  • horse-drawn sleigh rides on request and a wine cellar for an evening for the adults,
  • a restaurant with regional cooking — the hotel is a certified “GenussWirt” for local produce,
  • a lift; most rooms have a balcony and a mountain view,
  • ski room with a boot dryer, parking and free Wi-Fi.

To the slopes

By our ski bus or by car — we meet at the Hauser Kaibling gondola

Lessons start at 9:30 at the Hauser Kaibling gondola valley station. Every day at 9:00 our private ski bus leaves the hotel — just for our group, included in the price, skis travel in the bus — and returns at about 16:00. No waiting for a public ski bus: we go straight to the gondola. You can also drive there yourselves.

Four mountains, the World Cup and a mining town

Schladming is a Styrian town with more than 800 years of history and one of Austria’s ski capitals. The World Cup has raced on Planai since 1973, the World Championships came here twice (1982 and 2013), and 123 km of runs link four mountains — you ski from one to the next, and a loop over all four peaks is a local one-day classic.

Hauser Kaibling

2015 m

The highest of the four and our gateway to the slopes — in week 1 our private ski bus drops us at the 8-seat gondola in Haus im Ennstal, and in week 2 we stay in Haus itself. Runs include the FIS-Abfahrt and Weltcup-Abfahrt, “Die Schönste” (“the most beautiful”), Panorama and the wide, easy Kaiblingalm and Höfi, plus the XXL Funslope (1460 m). Next to the gondola is Wollis Kids Park — 24,000 m² of learning terrain with a lift and conveyor belts. Women raced for World Championship medals here in 1982, and since winter 2025/26 the new Senderbahn gondola and the heated Mitterhausalm chairlift link the mountain faster with Planai.

From the town’s history

  1. 1180

    First mention

The settlement appears in documents as Slaebnich — a name of Slavic origin. Schladming received town rights in 1322.

  2. 1408

    A miners’ town

The “Schladminger Bergbrief” mining code was written down and later adopted by mines in Austria, Germany and even Venice. Up to 1,500 miners worked the silver, lead and copper mines.

  3. 1525

    Miners’ and peasants’ revolt

On 3 July the rebels took the town and locked the governor of Styria in the church tower — their only military victory in that war. Three months later the town was razed and lost its town rights.

  4. 1862

    Protestant church

The largest Protestant church in Styria (1,000 seats) is built, with parts of an altar from c. 1570. Schladming and Ramsau remain the heart of Styrian Protestantism.

  5. 1910

    First ski races

The first ski race in Schladming. By 1914 racers were on Hauser Kaibling, and in 1949 the region’s first gondola opened there.

  6. 1925

    A town again

After 400 years Schladming regains its town rights. A Peasant War monument stands on the square, and the Salzburg Gate survives to this day.

  7. 1973

    World Cup

The first World Cup races on Planai — since 1997 as the Nightrace, a night slalom at the end of January.

  8. 1982 · 2013

    World Championships

In 1982 the men raced on Planai and the women on Hauser Kaibling. In 2013 about 610 athletes from about 70 countries came — Ted Ligety won three golds, and Polish skiers competed too.

  9. 2017

    Special Olympics

Co-host of the Special Olympics World Winter Games with Ramsau and Graz. Back in 1993 Schladming hosted the organisation’s first games outside the USA.

Fun facts for the road

Little ones ski free

In winter 2026/27 children born in 2021 or later get a free ski pass for all four mountains — issued at the ticket office (card deposit).

Hopsi waits for the kids

The mascot of the 1982 World Championships now has a winter wonderland for children on Planai — with a dragon conveyor and a slide.

Sledging after dark

On Hochwurzen the 7 km toboggan run is floodlit Tuesday to Saturday in February, and the gondola takes sledges up until 9:30 pm.

The Dachstein glacier

At 2,700 m: the Sky Walk above a 250 m wall, Austria’s highest suspension bridge, the “Stairway to Nothingness” and the Ice Palace. Closed on Tuesdays in winter.

A Polish connection

Polish skiers raced at the 2013 World Championships in Schladming too, including Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel and Karolina Chrapek.

A cousin in Japan

Since 1977 Schladming has been twinned with Furano on Hokkaido — also a winter resort.

Where we go

Two destinations for 2027

For the 2027 winter break we have family trips to two places: Schladming in the Alps — in both weeks of the break, each in a different hotel — and, half the drive from Warsaw, Špindlerův Mlýn in the Czech Krkonoše.

A children’s area on the slopes of SchladmingWinter break 2027 · Schladming

Austria

Large, snow-sure Alpine resorts with extensive infrastructure: long runs of varying difficulty, real vertical and conditions for the whole family — whatever the level.

Czechia

The nearest big mountains for Warsaw families: a shorter drive, wide runs and learning areas for children. For the 2027 winter break we are going to Špindlerův Mlýn — the best-known ski resort in Czechia.

See the Czech trip

What we look for in a destination

  • accommodation with breakfast and dinner, with a pool or a playroom for children,
  • quick access to the slopes — next to the lifts or by ski bus,
  • gentle training runs for children and interesting descents for parents,
  • a drive from Warsaw in one day, with no overnight stop, and parking at the hotel.

Why with Zone4

Staff the children know

Training is led by PZN-licensed Zone4 instructors — the same people children ski with at Górka Szczęśliwicka, day camps and one-day trips.

Small level-matched groups

Groups of 6–8, from first independent runs to technique polishing — everyone trains at their own pace, nobody waits and nobody chases.

Everything in Polish

Abroad, but with no language barrier: our instructors run the lessons and a Polish tour leader handles everything on site. No searching for a local school.

Trip experience

For years we have run one-day trips and winter day camps — we know how to organise a slope day for kids and parents alike.

Frequently asked questions

When and where are we going?
For the 2027 Mazovian winter break we are going to the Schladming-Dachstein region in Austria — in both weeks of the break, each in a different hotel (7 nights, 6 days of skiing). Week 1: from Saturday 30 January to Saturday 6 February at Landhotel Häuserl im Wald in Mitterberg near Gröbming — a hotel we checked in person. Week 2: from Saturday 6 to Saturday 13 February at Felsners Hotel 4* in the centre of Haus im Ennstal, at the foot of the Hauser Kaibling.
What exactly is included in the price?
The base price includes 7 nights with breakfast and dinner, the local tourist tax, insurance (medical costs and accident cover) and a Polish tour leader. In week 1 (Häuserl) there is also a daily bus to the slopes plus curling and the ice rink at the hotel; in week 2 (Felsners) — the hotel spa and a children’s playroom. The 6-day lift pass and lessons for children and adults are chosen at sign-up, separately for each person. Travel is on your side.
How many hours a day are the lessons?
Children: 6 days of 4.5 hours with an instructor, with a lunch break during which the children stay in their instructors’ care. Adults: 6 days of 2.5 hours, usually in the morning while the children are in their lessons.
How much does the trip cost?
The price depends on each participant’s age (adults and teens, children in different age bands) and on whether you add a lift pass and lessons. At sign-up the price is calculated as soon as you add participants. The interest list receives the full price list first.
Is the lift pass included?
You choose the 6-day lift pass at sign-up, separately for each person — at the group rate; if you have your own pass, just leave it unticked. Children born in 2021 or later ski for free.
Can we choose our room?
Yes. We sell specific rooms from the block reserved for our group. In week 1 (Häuserl) there are family suites for up to 5 people, pairs of rooms across the corridor and rooms for 2 or 3; in week 2 (Felsners) double rooms, also with an extra bed for a child, and family rooms for up to 4. At sign-up we suggest a room that fits your family, and the room you choose goes into the contract.
How do we get there and to the slopes?
You drive to the hotel yourselves — about 1,050 km from Warsaw, roughly 9 hours’ drive with no overnight stop; we will suggest the route and a packing list. We meet for lessons at 9:30 at the Hauser Kaibling gondola valley station. In week 1 our private ski bus runs there from the hotel every day (9:00, back at about 16:00, included in the price), or you can drive (about 15 minutes, parking at the gondola). In week 2 the gondola is about 1 km away — by ski bus (the stop is about 100 m from the hotel) or on foot, and a run ends about 100 m from the hotel.
From what age can children join the lessons?
We run ski lessons for children aged 6–12 who can already ski. For younger children we will run a ski kindergarten if there is a group — travelling with a younger child? Write to us.
Do parents have to ski?
No. Parents can ski on their own, take adult lessons (an extra) or simply relax at the hotel — children in lessons and at lunch are looked after by our instructors.
Does my child need to ski before the trip?
Yes — we do not teach from zero on the trip. Groups are matched by level, but everyone taking lessons should already be able to ski. If your child cannot ski yet, join our lessons at Górka Szczęśliwicka in Warsaw before the trip — they will get much more out of a week in the Alps.
Will there be snowboard groups?
No — on the trip we only run ski lessons; we are not planning snowboard groups. You are welcome to ride a board on your own.
Do we need our own equipment?
No — you can rent skis or a board, boots and a helmet from our Warsaw rental for the whole trip and take them in the car. The resort also has its own rentals. In week 1 (Häuserl), skates and cross-country skis need to be your own — there is no skate rental on site.
Are you going to Czechia too?
Yes — for the 2027 winter break (30.01–06.02.2027) we are also running a family week in Špindlerův Mlýn in the Czech Krkonoše. Half the drive of the Alps, gentler runs and the same trip format. Details and the interest list are on the Czech trip page.

How does Schladming compare with other resorts?

Our resort comparison covers 8 countries: kilometres of runs by difficulty, lifts, pass prices and travel time from Warsaw (pages in Polish).
