Wisła — ski resort

Wisła lies in the Silesian Beskids, in Cieszyn county, in the valley where the river that gave the town its name has its source. It is not one ski station but several separate slopes scattered across the town’s valleys. The largest are Cieńków in the Malinka district, Skolnity right in the centre, Stożek above Łabajów and Nowa Osada below Czupel. Together they add up to over 20 km of runs and close to 30 lifts, seven of them chairlifts.

The practical consequence is that in Wisła you do not pick “the slope” but a specific station to match the day, your level and the weather. The stations differ in altitude, aspect and character, and driving between them takes a quarter of an hour. The shared WisPass covers eleven resorts in Wisła, Ustroń and Istebna — around 30 km of runs — so one ticket does not tie you to one lift.

Wisła is also one of the centres of Polish skiing. The Adam Małysz ski jump in Malinka hosts World Cup competitions, and the “Centrum” jumping complex sits next to the Skolnity base station. The town has an unusually large stock of accommodation and dining, which is why people tend to come here for several days rather than a single-day trip.

• Skolnity in the town centre — a year-round four-seater chairlift (800 m), two floodlit runs of about 1100 m (blue) and 980 m (red), plus the Polana Pingwina learning area with a magic carpet,
• Stożek above Wisła Łabajów — the highest station in town (roughly 713–959 m), about 3.3 km of runs including a 1600 m forest trail and a snowpark,
• Nowa Osada below Czupel — a four-seater chairlift (960 m) and three surface lifts, about 6.4 km of runs, all floodlit and covered by snowmaking,
• smaller stations such as Soszów, Stok and Klepki spread the traffic and shorten queues at peak times,
• the shared WisPass ticket: eleven resorts in Wisła, Ustroń and Istebna, around 30 km of runs,
• rental shops, servicing and ski schools at the base stations of all the larger areas.

Because the runs are split between several stations, Wisła caters for every level — you just have to pick the right lift. Beginners are best served by Polana Pingwina below Skolnity or the lower clearings at Cieńków and Nowa Osada, all with magic carpets and short, gentle nursery slopes. Intermediates get the most out of Nowa Osada and Cieńków: long, wide runs with snowmaking and floodlights. Confident skiers should head for Stożek, whose black run along the chairlift and red run with its steep middle section, known as Ścianka, are the most demanding in town, and for the upper parts of Cieńków, where runs 1 and 2 start sharply. Families with children usually choose Nowa Osada or Skolnity, where schools and rental shops sit right at the base station.

Wisła is reached by national road 81 from Katowice to Skoczów, then regional road 941 through Ustroń. From Warsaw it is about 390 km, roughly 4.5 hours: the A1 to Gliwice, then the S1 via Tychy and Bielsko-Biała, then roads 81 and 941. From Katowice it is about 1.5 hours, from Kraków about 2 hours, from Bielsko-Biała about 45 minutes. The Skolnity base station, the most central in town, is at ul. Przy Skoczni 4, 43-460 Wisła.

The larger areas all have car parks at their base stations — Nowa Osada’s are free, with room for about 500 cars. During school breaks and long weekends road 941 through Ustroń can jam badly, especially on Saturday mornings, so an early start helps. Wisła is also on the railway, with stations at Wisła Uzdrowisko and Wisła Głębce, and the Skolnity base station is less than 700 m from the town’s transport hub.

The season in Wisła normally runs from late November or early December to mid-March, and often longer at Stożek, the highest station. The town sits low by Polish mountain standards — base stations start around 480–560 m — so natural snow is scarcer than in the Tatras and everything depends on technical snowmaking, which all the larger stations have. The runs at Nowa Osada and Skolnity, and some at Cieńków, are floodlit, so skiing after dark is the norm here rather than an extra; queues in the evening are markedly shorter than on a Saturday morning.

Off the slopes Wisła offers Barania Góra with the source of the Vistula (easiest from Przysłop), the Presidential Castle in Wisła Czarne, the Adam Małysz ski jump in Malinka and the viewing tower on Skolnity. A dozen kilometres away lies Ustroń with its Zawodzie spa district and the Czantoria chairlift; in the other direction are Istebna, Koniaków and the Kubalonka pass with its cross-country trails.

Zone4 is a ski and snowboard school from Warsaw building ZoneCloud — a booking system for lessons with instructors. We do not own any slope: what we add is the thing slopes usually lack, namely a free slot with a named instructor, visible online and bookable on the spot. Today it runs at Górka Szczęśliwicka in Warsaw, at Rybno and at Szwajcaria Bałtowska.
