Ustroń — ski resort

Ustroń lies in the Silesian Beskids at the mouth of the Vistula valley, about 30 km from Bielsko-Biała and about 75 km from Katowice. It is first and foremost a spa town — it holds statutory spa status, and its landmark is the row of pyramid-shaped sanatoria on the Zawodzie hillside. Skiing is an addition to that base, but a real one: the Czantoria base station stands on the main road a few minutes from the centre.

The main station is Kolej Linowa Czantoria — a Doppelmayr four-seater chairlift 1640 m long, carrying skiers from a base at roughly 389 m up to the Stokłosica clearing at 851 m. The 462 m vertical drop is one of the largest in the Silesian Beskids, and run 1 — red, 1900 m, with snowmaking and floodlighting along its full length — holds FIS homologation and is one of the longer floodlit runs in the Polish mountains.

The second operating slope is Poniwiec Mała Czantoria next door: a 900 m run served by a four-seater chairlift, a separate children’s lift and a snowpark by the top station. The town’s third station, Palenica in Jaszowiec, did not open its ski runs in the 2024/2025 or 2025/2026 seasons and now works as a bike park and sightseeing lift — worth checking its winter status directly before you travel.

• Poniwiec Mała Czantoria: a 900 m run with a four-seater chairlift, a 170 m children’s lift and a snowpark at the top station,
• rental, servicing, a ski school and a ski kindergarten at the Czantoria base station, plus parking for about 500 cars and 15 coaches,
• a mountain rescue (GOPR) post and a food outlet in the top station building,
• Palenica in Jaszowiec has not opened its ski slope since the 2024/2025 season — it runs as a bike park and sightseeing lift.

Ustroń works best for intermediates. Run 1 on Czantoria is 1900 m long with an average gradient of 24% — a solid, tiring descent that rewards a confident parallel turn, and its FIS homologation says plainly what it was built for. Calmer skiers take the blue run 2: 2600 m of gentle traversing through forest, with no steep sections but also no snowmaking listed by the operator, so it opens only when cover is good. Beginners have the clearing by the base station and the short runs along the Solisko and Faturka lifts higher up. Families with children usually pick Poniwiec — a shorter run, a separate lift for the youngest and less traffic than on Czantoria.

The Czantoria base station is at ul. 3 Maja 130, 43-450 Ustroń, on regional road 941 towards Wisła. From Warsaw it is about 375 km and roughly 4.5 hours: the A1 to Gliwice, then the S1 via Tychy and Bielsko-Biała, then national road 81 to Skoczów and road 941. From Katowice it is about 1.5 hours, from Kraków about 2 hours, from Bielsko-Biała about 40 minutes.

There is a large car park at the base station, with roughly 500 spaces for cars and 15 for coaches. Ustroń also has a rail connection from the Skoczów side, and the halts are within a quarter-hour walk or a short bus ride of both operating stations. Poniwiec sits deeper in the Poniwiec valley, a few kilometres from the centre, and is reached separately.

The season in Ustroń usually runs from late December or early January to early March. The Czantoria base station sits at roughly 389 m, so natural snow in the valley is scarce and opening depends on snowmaking on run 1 and on whether night temperatures allow snow production. The upper slopes around Stokłosica hold cover noticeably longer, and that is where the season starts first. Floodlighting allows skiing after dark, and the evening is the calmest window here — on Saturday mornings the chairlift queue can be long.

Ustroń is a spa town: the Zawodzie district with its pyramid-shaped sanatoria, hotel pools and spa areas, and a brine graduation tower. Above the town rises Równica with its scenic road and the Leśny Park Niespodzianek wildlife park, while the summit of Wielka Czantoria (995 m), a quarter of an hour’s walk from the top station, carries a viewing tower right on the Czech border. A gravity toboggan run operates below the top station in summer.

Zone4 is a ski and snowboard school from Warsaw building ZoneCloud — a booking system for lessons with instructors. We do not own any slope: what we add is the thing slopes usually lack, namely a free slot with a named instructor, visible online and bookable on the spot. Today it runs at Górka Szczęśliwicka in Warsaw, at Rybno and at Szwajcaria Bałtowska.
