Laworta in Ustrzyki Dolne — ski resort

Laworta has been running since 1995 on the northern slope of Kamienna Laworta (769 m), a hill barely two kilometres from the centre of Ustrzyki Dolne. The station is operated by Laworta Ski and holds the largest vertical drop anywhere in the Bieszczady — 256 metres between the base and the top. By national standards that is modest, but nothing in this corner of the Carpathians goes further.

The heart of the resort is the chairlift that carries skiers to the ridge, from where two long runs drop back down: the 1250 m main piste, homologated by FIS for slalom and giant slalom, and a slightly gentler parallel line of about 1150 m. The remaining runs — 300, 200 and 100 m — sit at the base and are served by platter lifts and a magic carpet for the youngest.

Ustrzyki Dolne is an unusual case: a town with two ski stations on opposite sides of the valley. Facing Laworta, on ul. Naftowa, is Gromadzyń. For anyone staying several days that means switching slopes without repacking, and for the town itself it means the status of a winter base camp for the whole Bieszczady region. Laworta’s own base station has an inn, a rental shop with a workshop and a small guesthouse, so a day on the snow can end without driving back into town.

Laworta is a resort for skiers who already ride confidently: both long runs off the chairlift are red-graded, average around 20 percent gradient and include sections that demand edge control once the snow hardens. That pitch, plus the FIS homologation, makes the hill popular with clubs training slalom. Beginners are not left out — three short runs of 100 to 300 m sit at the foot of the hill with their own lifts, separated from traffic coming down from above. It is the classic single-slope layout: you learn at the bottom and take the chairlift only once parallel turns are reliable.

The base station address is Brzegi Dolne 122, 38-700 Ustrzyki Dolne, on regional road 896 leading north-west out of town. From Warsaw it is about 450 km and realistically about 6 hours — the S17 via Lublin, then towards Rzeszów and road 84 through Lesko. Rzeszów is about 100 km away (approx. 1.5 h), Lublin about 230 km, Kraków about 290 km.

Three free car parks at the station hold roughly 450 cars, so even during the school break parking is rarely an issue. Ustrzyki Dolne has bus links with Rzeszów, Sanok and Krosno, but the slope is still about 2 km from the bus station — without a car it is worth arranging a transfer with your accommodation in advance.

The season in Ustrzyki normally runs from the turn of December and January into March. The northern aspect is a measurable advantage for Laworta: snow lasts longer here than on the neighbouring slopes, and every run except the traverse piste is snowed technically and groomed. The Bieszczady can be snowy but are also unpredictable, so check the resort report before travelling. Floodlighting allows evening skiing, which midweek means an all-but-empty slope.

Ustrzyki Dolne is the gateway to the Bieszczady: Lake Solina with its dam and the marina in Polańczyk are close by, the Bieszczady National Park natural history museum is in the town itself, and the narrow-gauge forest railway runs from Majdan near Cisna. The region belongs to the Bieszczady Starry Sky Park, so a clear winter evening offers some of the best stargazing in Poland.

The arrangement is freelance and non-exclusive — you can teach with us alongside your own clients or a local ski school.
