Zieleniec Ski Arena — ski resort in Duszniki-Zdrój

Zieleniec sits in the Orlickie Mountains, about 12 km from the centre of Duszniki-Zdrój, at altitudes between roughly 800 and 1025 m. Administratively it is a district of the spa town; in practice it is a separate settlement built around skiing, with guesthouses, rental shops and lifts strung along a single road. Several independent operators run the lifts, linked by a shared pass — hence the trade name Ski Arena, also used today as Zieleniec Sport Arena.

Weather is what makes this resort. Zieleniec has one of the snowiest microclimates in Poland: precipitation is clearly heavier than in the surrounding basins, and snow cover lasts on average about 150 days a year. The season therefore starts earlier and ends later than at lower Sudetes stations, and snowmaking on much of the terrain works more as insurance than as the basis of operations.

The descents themselves are short — most lifts run from a few hundred metres to just under a kilometre, and height differences within the resort are in the range of 150–200 m. Zieleniec compensates with quantity and spread: dozens of runs and variants scattered across the slopes of Zielony Garb and neighbouring hills, mostly blue and red. It is a place for clocking up kilometres, learning and skiing with children rather than for one long, technical descent.

Zieleniec is primarily a resort for beginners and intermediates. Wide, moderately pitched blue and red runs dominate, and the sheer number of separate slopes means it is easy to find one that happens to be uncrowded. For learners the layout is comfortable: training clearings with magic carpets and short platter lifts sit apart from the main descents, so nobody comes barrelling through from above. Advanced skiers will use Zieleniec for carving and speed work rather than for steeps — there are few difficult sections and they are short. Families benefit from the shape of the village too: most lifts are within walking distance of the guesthouses, with no need to load gear back into the car.

The address is Zieleniec 72, 57-340 Duszniki-Zdrój. From Warsaw it is about 465 km, roughly 5.5 hours — the S8 to Wrocław, then national road 8 through Kłodzko and Polanica-Zdrój to Duszniki-Zdrój. From Wrocław it is about 2 hours, from Katowice about 3.5 hours. The final 12 km from Duszniki follow regional road 389, which climbs steeply to Zieleniec in tight bends.

That last stretch is often the hardest part of the trip: during snowfall and frost it gets slippery and calls for winter tyres, sometimes chains. Parking in the village is spread among the individual lifts and mostly free, but the car parks fill up in the morning during the school holidays. Long-distance and regional buses reach Duszniki-Zdrój from Kłodzko and Wrocław, and local buses and minibuses continue to Zieleniec — check timetables ahead in season.

The season in Zieleniec is one of the longest in Poland: in a favourable winter the slopes run from late November or early December to the end of March, and the higher runs are sometimes skiable into April. The microclimate of the Orlickie Mountains, an altitude above 800 m and snowmaking on most runs all help. Floodlighting allows skiing after dark, usually until around 8 pm — evenings and weekdays bring short queues, while during the school holidays and at weekends traffic concentrates around the largest chairlifts, which makes the smaller lifts the calmest option.

Zieleniec works well as a base for exploring the Kłodzko region. Duszniki-Zdrój has the Museum of Papermaking in a historic paper mill and a spa park with a Chopin festival tradition, while Jamrozowa Polana holds a biathlon and cross-country complex. Also close by are the Stołowe Mountains with Szczeliniec Wielki and Błędne Skały, the spa town of Kudowa-Zdrój, and a border crossing into the Czech side of the Orlické hory.
