Witów-Ski — ski station in Witów

Witów-Ski operates in the village of Witów, Kościelisko commune, on the eastern slopes of the Orawa-Witów hills below Magura Witowska. It is about 15 km from Zakopane via Kościelisko, and only a few kilometres from the border crossing at Chochołów. The resort chose one solid chairlift over a scattered network of platter lifts, and that shows in how the slope is organised and how it skis over a full day.

The heart of the station is a four-seater Doppelmayr chairlift roughly 1 km long, with a capacity of about 2,200 people per hour and a moving carpet at the loading point; the ride takes about 6 minutes. From the top station at around 970 m, two runs drop back down, totalling about 2 km with roughly 140 m of vertical. They are wide, regularly groomed and long enough that a single descent actually counts for something.

For beginners and children, a short platter lift (about 120 m) and a magic carpet work at the base, keeping first lessons well clear of the main descent. Witów is also known for an extensive snowpark, built during the season whenever snow depth allows — for park riders it is one of the more important addresses in Podhale. The station’s pass is part of the regional Tatry Super Ski system.

Witów suits beginners and intermediates, with the balance tipped towards the latter. The runs from the top station are wide and evenly pitched at a moderate angle — good ground for working on technique, because a kilometre-long descent gives you time to find a rhythm, which the short slopes around Zakopane rarely do. Beginners start on the platter lift and carpet at the base and can move onto the main slope after their first lessons without a jarring step up. Advanced riders come mainly for the snowpark, since Witów has no steep or technically demanding sections — for those you head to Kasprowy Wierch or Białka.

The address is Witów 205c, 34-512 Witów. From Zakopane take regional road 958 through Kościelisko, about 15 km or roughly 20 minutes. From Warsaw it is about 425 km, roughly 5 hours: the S7 via Kraków, then the Zakopianka (S7/DK47) to Nowy Targ, and from there either via Czarny Dunajec and Chochołów or via Zakopane and Kościelisko. From Kraków allow about 2 hours.

The station has large free car parks — a noticeable difference from central Zakopane, where parking can be a problem. Witów sits off the main tourist axis, so the approach is usually calmer than the roads towards Kuźnice or Białka, though the Zakopianka before Nowy Targ still queues on Friday afternoons and Sunday returns. Minibuses from Zakopane towards Chochołów also stop in Witów.

The season in Witów usually begins in the second half of December and, in good conditions, lasts into March — for 2025/2026 the planned opening was 20 December, weather permitting. Technical snowmaking and daily grooming hold the runs together through warmer spells, and floodlighting allows skiing after dark during the evening “white hours”. The snowpark is built when snow depth allows, so its availability in December and late in the season is worth checking before you travel. The busiest times are school holidays and weekend mornings.

Witów lies at the mouth of the Chochołowska Valley — the Siwa Polana entrance, where walks and horse-drawn rides into the valley begin, is a few kilometres away. The Termy Chochołowskie thermal baths are in the same area, and the road back to Zakopane passes the Kościeliska Valley, one of the finest in the Western Tatras. Chochołów, with its historic wooden architecture, and the crossing into Slovakia are both within a quarter of an hour’s drive.
