Polana Szymoszkowa — ski resort in Zakopane

Polana Szymoszkowa sits in the western part of Zakopane, on the southern side of the Gubałówka ridge, about 1.5 km from Krupówki. The slope faces straight towards the Tatras, so the panorama with Giewont stays in view for the whole descent — the station’s most recognisable feature and the reason it appears in most photographs of skiing in Zakopane.

The area is small but well equipped: two runs totalling roughly 1.7 km, spread between 859 and 1,120 m, which gives 261 m of vertical. The main descent, about 1.3 km long, is served by a six-seater chairlift with weather bubbles, built in 2000 and able to carry 3,000 people per hour. The gentler lower part of the meadow is served by a smaller four-seater some 360 m long.

Of all the slopes in Zakopane, Szymoszkowa is the most urban: it is a quarter of an hour on foot from the centre, there is free parking at the base, and a ski school, a rental shop and a KidsPark with a magic carpet operate on site. It is a hill for learning, for an afternoon session and for skiing with children — not for a full day in high mountains. For longer and harder descents, people drive on to Kasprowy Wierch or Białka.

This is above all a slope for beginners and intermediates. The upper section of the main run is graded red and steep enough to demand a controlled turn, but lower down it opens into a wide, calm blue section where first descents from the top can be practised safely. The lower run under the small chairlift is gentle and short, which makes it an ideal second step after the KidsPark. The width of the meadow and the fast bubble chairlift also make bad weather noticeably more bearable here than on the exposed slopes higher up. Advanced skiers will use Szymoszkowa as a warm-up or an evening session — two runs are learnt in a quarter of an hour.

The station’s address is ul. Szymaszkowa 2, 34-500 Zakopane. Coming from Kraków along the Zakopianka you enter town on ul. Kasprowicza, then follow the roundabouts towards ul. Nowotarska and ul. Nędzy-Kubińca; the final stretch is signposted. From Warsaw it is about 440 km and roughly 5.5 hours, from Kraków about 2 hours, from Katowice about 2.5.

There is a wide, free car park at the base station — a rarity in Zakopane in high season. The railway and bus stations are about 2.8 km away, and Krupówki is a walk of roughly 20 minutes. You can also drive to the top station from the Gubałówka ridge side, via ul. Salamandra or ul. Słodyczki.

The season normally runs from mid-December to the end of March, and in colder years into early April; snowmaking covers about 1.8 km of runs, so the slope stays skiable even when the valley is bare. The southern exposure means the surface softens quickly on spring afternoons — the best conditions come in the morning and again in the evening, when temperatures drop under the floodlights and the snow firms up. Note that the geothermal bathing area on the meadow is a summer attraction and stays closed in winter.

From the top station a ridge walk leads to Gubałówka with its viewing terrace and funicular. Downhill, towards town, it is about 1.5 km to Krupówki, some 2 km to the Tatra Museum and about 4 km to the Wielka Krokiew ski jump. The year-round Aqua Park Zakopane on ul. Jagiellońska is roughly 3.5 km away, and the mouth of the Kościeliska valley about 6 km. In summer the meadow itself hosts a geothermal bathing area fed with water of about 30°C from the Szymoszkowa GT1 borehole.

Zone4 is a ski and snowboard school from Warsaw building ZoneCloud — a booking system for lessons with instructors. We do not own any slope: what we add is the thing slopes usually lack, namely a free slot with a named instructor, visible online and bookable on the spot.
